Why Gypsy?

Gleason's Gymnastic School has a long, rich history. At it's beginning, thirty years ago, it was a recreational program only. Larry Gleason and several of his gymnastic friends enjoyed performing. They had organized a traveling road show that consisted of four men and women gymnasts. It was a one-hour show that included tumbling, trampoline, vaulting, hand balancing, rhythmic gymnastics and comedy. The whole show was set to music. During the summers, the small troupe traveled to small Minnesota towns and performed. In between performances they camped and practiced outdoors. All of the gymnastic equipment they used was packed on one small trailer. Because the life of Gypsies has been characterized as being nomadic, having a love for music, dancing and performing, it was once said we were like Gypsies. The name stuck and we became the Gypsy Gymnasts. As the adult performing group moved on to other things, and the School eventually developed a competitive program, the name was handed down to the team. At one time, all members of our trampoline team were also members of the gymnastic team but as the trampoline team developed an identity of it's own, it was decided to name them the Gypsy Flyers.
